    After two years of nursing research, our district has adapted a new Health Procedure for Lice. Recommendations were taken from the National Association of School Nurses, CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and surrounding districts in Delaware County for the management of lice in the school setting. Studies by the AAP and CDC indicate that screening for live lice has not been proven to have a significant effect on the incidence of head lice in a school community.
     
     
    When a case of lice is discovered in kindergarten, elementary or secondary schools the following will occur: 
    • Students found to have lice they will be sent home for treatment.
    • A student may return to school as soon as possible after treatment if they have no live lice and has been judged to not be contagious by the school nurse.
    • Any siblings of that student will also be checked for an infestation.
    • A classroom note will be sent home with each kindergarten/elementary child in the class for notification of a case of lice in the class advising to report if any other students did have a lice infestation.
    • Students in the secondary schools will have any close contact checked for possible infestations. 
    • If a child is symptomatic they may be sent to the nurse at any time for a head check.

    To be readmitted to school, a parent/guardian must bring their student who has been treated to the Health Office for examination. The student must be lice free for re-admittance to school.
